PS3mote Update: See it in Action

Disclaimer: The image above is a mock-up. To see the actual controller we are talking about, watch the videos at the end of the article. We also recommend you read our original report on the “PS3mote” so you fully understand what is being explained in this article.

The mysterious “PS3mote”, the Wii-mote-like PS3 controller that has been talked about numerous times over the past 2 years the PS3 has been released.  Every gamer knows the power of a controller like this.  The Nintendo Wii is the best selling console this generation, and let’s face it…  It’s because of the controller.  A controller that is so user friendly, that even grandma, and grandpa can pick it up, not be intimidated, and have a blast.  That’s the appeal, everyone has used a remote for their TV, their VCR, their DVD player.  The remote is an icon in American (and I am sure many other) culture.

This “PS3mote” has been rumored many times, in the past.  It has even had many different explanations of how it worked.  Whether it was a waggle controller, an FPS controller, or a “break apart” controller, it never was released, or shown to the public.  It has even been said that this “new” PS3 controller has made it to the hands of developers.

Even with all the different versions of this “new” PS3 controller, nothing has ever been seen or heard about it…  until now.

Back in June, we reported on a “PS3mote” that was being tested by a focus group behind closed doors.  NDA’s were signed but we had an insider willing to tell us all about the focus group, and the products being tested.  A controller was being tested for the PlayStation 3, that offered superior control to that of the Nintendo Wii’s.  The only drawback was that it involved the use of a tripod.

After all this time, still no controller has surfaced.  However something of interest has.  Back when we first broke the story of the focus group test, and the “PS3mote”, there were some details we left out.  We left it out well, because there was no evidence that such a name, company, technology, or entity existing under the name we were given.  In fact, we originally thought it may have just been a mock-up name for the “ps3mote”.

Since then, we haven’t given up our search for information on the “new” PS3 controller.  We have finally found what we believe was the technology being tested that day, by Sony.  While it appears that Sony has decided against using this technology, we wanted everyone to see what could have been…

During the focus group testing, there was a name across the top of one of the laptops, which again we thought was just a mock-up name.  The name was Sixense.  Back in June we scoured the net in search of something related to Sixense, and nothing turned up.  Well, after some serious sleuthing, we have finally found our Sixense.  If you head over to http://sixense.com you will see the exactly what was tested that day, in the focus group.  A quick whois.net search will reveal that the site was created “21 Sep 2008 11:14:00″ which explains why we couldn’t find anything on it back in June, and dismissed it as a mock-up name.

So here it is in all of it’s glory.  What could have been and still might be the “PS3mote

From sixense.com:

Sixense Demo Highlights

We would like to point out some similarities between what we reported on and what we now know about Sixense.

From our report:

“The “PS3mote” is said to be incredibly responsive and accurate.  When the demonstrator crouched while playing the paintball game, the character on screen did as well.”

From a report on Sixense by bit-tech.net:

“By far the most impressive part of this particular demo was when you ducked down, as your character in the game ducks down behind the wall in front of the shooting point.”

From our report:

“A demonstrator at this focus group was there showing off the “PS3motes” capabilities, along with some mini-games to play.  The mini games ranged from tennis, to fencing, to a “really really cool” paintball game. “

From a report about Sixense on trustedreviews.com:

“Obviously the most awesome was the obligatory lightsaber mini-game (seriously LucasArts, talk to these guys!), but trying my hand at a quick bit of Golf, both putting and driving, Baseball, Rugby and a sort of Paintball game I honestly can’t describe how incredible the experience was.”

In our report we also talked about how this “PS3mote” needed a tripod to function… Well this link from Ubergizmo.com talks about how it (Sixense TrueMotion) is “based on precise tracking relative to a base station”.

So there you have it.  We reported on the “PS3mote” back in June.  NVision08 where the Sixense was demoed publicly for the first time started August 25th 2008.  Sixense.com was created September 21st 2008.  Anyone can see that the only way we could have known about this technology is if our “insider” was telling the truth about the focus group, that was held by PlayStation Underground earlier in 2008.

What do you think?  Could this have been the “PS3mote”?  Could we still see this technology on the PS3?  What do you think of the technology?  Would this technology work well with the PS3?  Would you play games created for this technology?

Please comment below or discuss in our forums.

  1. Wait, so this isn’t even real? What a pointless article.

  2. sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet

  3. @ Anon,
It’s real technology, and it was tested for use on a PlayStation 3.

We just don’t know if Sony is going to release a controller based on this tech, or if they have decided against it.

We do know that this tech was focus tested on PlayStation Underground members

  12. I’d buy this. I hope something comes of it. Could you imagine if they added in funcionality of the PS Eye as well?

  13. LOL is this is a joke? Its just a wiimote, there is nothing new or innovative or innovative about something that debuted years ago.

  14. this looks better than 1:1 o_o

  15. @sephiroth, yeah things like this will always be compared to the wiimote, even thouhg its not the first sotion sensing controller, nor is it the best, unfortunately, even WITH wii motion plus, the wiimote fails to be as accurate.

  16. Wolf26pack Says:

I have read many an article about the PS3mote and what it could be, some have speculated that the stationary object it would use would be the PS EYE and that could well be true. If Sony were to come out with this I know I would buy it.

The Demo’s weren’t anything special. What I mean by that is that they were quickly put together, but I guess it doesn’t matter since they do get their point across. Although if they put a little gloss on the demo’s it would have been that much better.

What is too bad is if Sony did aquire this technology it would take a long ass time for them to implement it into their games. For Example the possibility of it being put in GoW III is almost impossible. Unless they patched in the support later on. GoW IV yea but I highly doubt GoW III.

Some of the cool things developers could do but won’t would be patching older PS3 games to work with it but they will never do that. They could so rejuvinate some of the older games and get sales going again for their older games such as Star Wars the Force Unleashed but again the chances of that are slim to none. The Videogame Industry is always moving forward and rarely looks back.

  18. Wii Copy Cat Says:

What a joke, Playstation has lost all their innovation and now copies Nintendo. That’s why I went from PS2 to Wii this generation of gaming systems. Sony is going down hill and will go the way of Sega if they don’t do better than a lag behind copy cat without their own innovation.

  19. Sony finally saw their survey that there are more fat people playing the ps3 in their basement, their solution is the playstation remote.

  20. KaosPwnsFanboys Says:

Oy Wii Copy Cat dickwad, Nintendo didnt invent motion sensing controllers. If im not mistaken, MS came up with the concept on PC some years earlier. The only thing Nintendo did this generation is alienate their hardcore user base.

  21. Nintendo did not do so first, but he popularized. that is the true

  22. @KnaveX “…even WITH wii motion plus, the wiimote fails to be as accurate.”

You haven’t seen its demonstration video, have you?

It even takes into account 3D position! Next time, do your research!

  23. @Veiron

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b1emrtvihg8&feature=related

You still need to press buttons to get the game to put your character into a correct position because they chose not to make your own position the position of your character.

“Press B to go into parry stance” Shouldnt you be able to go into parry position all by yourself?, how hard is it to put the sword in the correct position? how hard is it for the wii to recognize thats the position? Also, how many times did you see that person try to attack more than once, but he failed because the wii failed to recognize his movement in that small time?

  24. sorry for two continuous posts, but I must clarify , not saying it takes away from the wiimotion plus or anything, but it just doesnt seem as free handed as this demonstration were this guy just walked around the whole stage and everything followed his position so seamlessly. The only thing that bothers me is that we cant have a post related to motion sensing on anything without having rabbid fanboys screaming OMG teh nintendoh gods invented teh sensing of motion! Nintendoh owns your body because it can also sense teh motion, God Copied nintendoh!

  26. incredibilistic Says:

This is a niche product so even if Sony did release a controller that did all these things it wouldn’t work for every type of game. Just like you can’t play Gran Turismo with the PS Eye it’s doubtful that they would use proven franchises with proven control schemes and change them to work with the PS3mote.

If they do release this controller I really hope they use the PS Eye as the base unit. I bought the EyeToy so many years ago and don’t think I used it more than 3 times. I bought the PS Eye several months ago because of the possibilities it could have and again it’s proven to be a waste of $50 (or whatever I paid for it).

I’m not even sure I’m actually down with them doing this. They’ll just be taking more time away from really digging into the stuff they already have to take care of now. Although the PSP is a great device it’s still a lukewarm device. Where’s the PSPhone?

What about all the features on the PS3? Even small things like new music visualizers or new photo album slideshow; what happened to that? Sony’s changed the base audience of the device so many times that if they add this controller it will confuse the market even more. I get that it’s a multi-function multimedia device but I think they should stop trying to reinvent the system and just focus on what it does great now and expand on it.

But that’s just my opinion, I could be wrong.

  31. This is really great. I used to own Wii, but had to sell it because the latency of the game was too much to give me the feeling of virtual gaming. This may well change with Wii Motion Plus and if it does, I might again pick up Wii; however, if PS3 can do this there will be no reason to.

Wii has a big advantage in terms of motion control as it comes with Wii system itself i.e. full support from 3rd party.

PS3 (or 360 for that matter) has a big advantage because their games are in HD.

Motion sensing is motion sensing so I don’t care if they would look similar to that of Wii, but if Sony will release Motion sensing game I would like to see much more accurate, immediate response. And want to see option to involve all four extremities!!

  32. what does this have to do with sony. for all we know sony have abandond the project and sixence are still trying to find an investor.
